'As a society we want to give all children equal chances and a good start in life but the reality is some kids do have to forego school trips because there just isn't enough money at home to cover the cost.'

Big SChool Camp can help to break the financial barriers affecting participation for children from low income households

Having the camp, and all the activities, actually on the school site means that children remain within walking distance of their own homes. This encourages social inclusion, meaning children are all within the setting and they are able to camp together as a community.

We can offer exciting opportunities for all, at very low cost.

Big School Camp does this by bringing the outdoor learning experience to your children, showing that they don’t have to travel a long way to enjoy the outdoors. Their own, familiar, school grounds can provide the catalyst for them to go back home and get their families to go outdoors in their local area. This can give them the confidence to visit a woodland, a beach, a park or even to set up a tent or shelter in their own back garden.

School budgets directed at pupil premium students can be managed to ensure 100% of students can gain the same outdoor learning experience.

Big School Camp does this by making it completely affordable to schools. It costs schools around £3 less per student than a school receives for their Pupil premium students each week. Schools can redirect this money from their budgets to help support these students gain the same experiences.

So what is Poverty Proofing?

Brighton & Hove Council has introduced the ‘Poverty-proofing the School Day’ initiative across the city to ensure no child misses out on the opportunities and experiences at school because of low family income. Their research confirmed that child poverty is definitely not a thing of the past.

There is early evidence of increased attendance and attainment of disadvantaged pupils as a result of removing barriers to learning.

It is the case in Brighton & Hove currently that there is a gap between the outcomes for pupils in disadvantage and their peers and all schools have ‘diminishing this difference’ as a key priority.

The Brighton & Hove Fairness Commission considered these issues and one of the main recommendations of the Commission is to introduce ‘Poverty Proofing the School Day’ into the City.

We at Big School Camp are focused on offering these outdoor learning opportunities to every student in every school.

Now is the time to introduce free school uniforms, free school transport and free school trips too. Real cost of going to state school should be zero
